For nearly a decade, Emilia Clarke has ruled the ratings as Daenerys Targaryen on HBO’s Game of Thrones. With the series slated to end next year, the 31-year-old actress has set her sights on new challenges. First up: conquering the Star Wars universe in this month’s Solo.

On a rainy April afternoon, Emilia Clarke enters the bright, airy Egyptian galleries of the Metropolitan Museum of Art the way so many movie-lovers before her have: quoting Billy Crystal in When Harry Met Sally. Adopting the unsourceable accent Crystal uses opposite Meg Ryan in a famously improvised scene filmed in this very room, Clarke starts stuttering, “Pah-pah-paprikash.” Our amused if bewildered guide, too young to get the reference, adds the 1989 rom-com to her list of movie recommendations from Clarke, who has already gushed about the 2017 religious drama Novitiate. Chuckling over this unlikely double feature, Clarke assures her, “You have two incredible movies coming your way.”

One reference the guide does get: Game of Thrones, the HBO juggernaut which stars Clarke as its most unstoppable heroine, Daenerys Targaryen. In fact, the very tour we’re taking, put together by a company called Museum Hack, is based on the series, and offers a fan-friendly survey of the sometimes inscrutable displays of the Met. You don’t have to be an art historian (our guide is an aspiring actress) to understand what Greek fire, Damascus blades, heraldry, mutilated men, samurai kamon, the dragon-born St. Margaret of Antioch, and an early female pharaoh have to do with wildfire, Valyrian steel, house words, and Clarke’s world-famous alter ego.

And yet, despite her fame, Clarke has managed to spend a full half-hour in the museum sponging up our guide’s trivia without being spotted. For years, Clarke’s brown hair let her hide in plain sight, but she recently bleached it an icy Targaryen blond. So, why the invisibility? Maybe it’s her height. “We both have a thing about our stature not quite being what people expect,” says her co-star Kit Harington, who, at five feet eight, has six inches on Clarke. Maybe it’s her outfit—the gray overcoat, cream sweater, and jeans are a far cry from the cloaks and armor of Thrones. Or maybe it’s her bright, decidedly non-intimidating personality. “When I’m goofing around with my pals, I’m unrecognizable,” she says. Harington calls Clarke’s humor “naughty,” and it’s certainly true that her informal, expletive-laced banter is a far cry from Daenerys’s imperious tones. “Sometimes, if I’m in a really bad mood,” Clarke notes, “people are like, ‘Khaleesi!’ ”

As Daenerys Targaryen in HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” the British actress Emilia Clarke battles evil while armed with dragons and an apparent immunity to fire. But as Louisa Clark in “Me Before You,” she’s a mere mortal caring for a demonically angry Englishman (Sam Claflin) determined to end his life after being hit by a motorcycle and paralyzed. At which point Lou decides to help him live again.

It’s a role Ms. Clarke was determined to play the moment she received the Jojo Moyes novel from which Thea Sharrock’s romantic drama, opening on June 3, was adapted. “I was utterly convinced that someone had found me and written me, Emilia, down,” she said. “It wasn’t even a question that I would do whatever it took to be able to play Lou.”

That included chemistry reads with six men before she and Mr. Claflin (“The Hunger Games”) were partnered, “which was wonderful because we already knew each other,” she said. “We sort of cheated.”

In a phone interview, the Emmy-nominated, Berkshire-reared Ms. Clarke, 29, a Drama Center London grad who had but two tiny parts on her professional résumé when she was cast as Daenerys, spoke about her love of the sea, warrior women and unlikely namesakes. These are edited excerpts from the conversation.

Why are you calling from California?

I spend half my time in London, half my time in Los Angeles. But sometimes L.A. can feel a bit intense and soul sucking. When you’re by the sea, you’ve got that sea air blowing all of the anxiety cobwebs away from every person who’s desperate to make it. The people walk around with no shoes on and surf, and I feel like I’m on holiday every day.

September 9th, 2015     Comments Off on Emilia in Die Zeit: German article and a new photoshoot     Author: Staff

In an interview with Die Zeit, Emilia talks about how Terminator Genisys was a dream come true for her. The article is in German, but in case there are fans who are either German or understand German you can read it below. A beautiful new photoshoot has also been released. I have added medium and low quality outtakes to the gallery. You can view them by visiting the following link.

Emilia Clarke doesn’t want to be remembered as Daenerys Targaryen
Emilia talks about taking over an iconic role and how she’ll be sad when her big show comes to an end.

Emilia Clarke doesn’t want to be typecast. On many occasions the “Game of Thrones” star, who plays determined Mother of Dragons Daenerys Targaryen, has said she’s reluctant to do nudity — one of the reasons she turned down “Fifty Shades of Grey.” “I have done naked scenes before, and I was worried about being stigmatized by doing it again,” she admits. Now she’s in “Terminator: Genisys” playing a much more fierce character: Sarah Connor, the mother of post-apocalyptic revolutionary John Connor (Jason Clarke), who in the film’s own timeline has been fighting alongside nice killer cyborg T-800 (Arnold Schwarzenegger, again) since childhood.

Do you feel you’ve been lucky with the roles you’ve received?
If being lucky means being able to work for many years seeking an opportunity, then yes, I’ve been lucky. Television gave me a boost, but I don’t want people to remember me as Daenerys Targaryen from “Game of Thrones”.

The characters you play tend to be very strong. How alike them are you?
I’m not ultra feminist, but I feel that I identify with girls who can do everything, and who use their power to defend good causes. I now get to play with a very different version of a young Sarah Connor, and I like that a female character has become iconic.

Is it difficult to perform such an iconic role?
I think it was more exciting than scary; Sarah is legendary and beautiful. What we did was impregnate her with a different force and create something new.

You seem to gravitate towards action and fantasy.
I have fun. Although for that you have to be in shape and have good arms: holding weapons, shooting and running involves a lot of wheezing. When you see a big action movie, it seems like everything is easy, but when you start to do it, it’s not. Especially with Sarah, who’s a tough woman who becomes a warrior and draws strength from all sides.

August 23rd, 2015     Comments Off on Emilia says Game of Thrones season six will have twists in store     Author: Staff

Emilia Clarke: Game Of Thrones season six will be ‘sick’
Emilia has teased that the season six storyline will have even more shocks in store for Game of Thrones fans.

The 28-year-old actress, who reprises her role as dragon queen Daenerys Targaryen in the small-screen retelling of George RR Martin’s fantasy novels, has already had a glimpse at the scripts for the forthcoming season.

“I’ve seen some of the new scripts and I’m like a kid on a sugar high,” she told the Daily Star. The British actress continued: “I can’t handle how sick some of them are. “We’re just going to hit the audience with every episode, coming up with something more mental that the last. I can’t believe some of the twists in store.”

Emilia also weighed in on Jon Snow’s fate, hinting Kit Harington’s character will not return. The actress and her Game Of Thrones co-stars have started read-throughs and rehearsals for season six of the show.

June 30th, 2015     Comments Off on Emilia talks to ELLE about Game of Thrones and Terminator     Author: Staff

Emilia talked to ELLE about her role as Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones and her role as Sarah Connor in Terminator Genisys. She talks the differences between Daenerys and Sarah Connor and more.

Did Emilia Clarke Just Say Sarah Connor Is More of a Badass Than Daenerys Targaryen?
That’s the Mother of Dragons you’re talking about.

Emilia Clarke is fearless. On Game of Thrones, she controls cities and dragons in Daenerys Targaryen’s quest for the Iron Throne. Off screen, the actress has been fashionably traveling the world to promote her upcoming film, Terminator: Genesys, on crutches due to a hip injury. Literally, nothing can stop her. Which is why we shouldn’t be surprised that nude action scenes in Terminator didn’t scare her, either. “Naked in a harness was fun,” the actress said during a press conference in L.A., reports People. “Doing stunts, that was good. That was interesting.”

Thanks to many steamy Thrones scenes, Clarke has had ample opportunity to find comfort in her own on-screen nakedness. But when she stepped into the infamous shoes of Sarah Connor, the 28-year-old actress entered nude territory: Time traveling in her birthday suit. When you time hop, you can’t wear any clothes, so Clarke strips down so she can levitate opposite costar Jai Courtney in the newest installment of the sci-fi franchise. Thanks to crafty camera angles, Clarke doesn’t appear fully nude in the film (“I had a few things I tried to hide,” she joked).
